About Us
Company Overview
Headquartered in Athens, Georgia, ArunA Biomedical, Inc. is a privately held biotechnology corporation dedicated to advancing drug discovery and basic research through the development and commercialization of innovative products and services derived from or related to human stem cells.
First to commercialize human ES research tools
ArunA, the first company to commercialize products derived from human embryonic stem cells, sees its proprietary technology as a catalyst leading to:
- the discovery of novel therapeutic compounds
- tests for neurotoxicity and
- breakthroughs in understanding human development and diseases
ArunAs unique stem cell research tools provide the potential for a more predictive source of cells for cell based assays.
Delivering off-the-shelf human ES research kits
The maintenance of human stem cells is difficult and costly. Moreover, the differentiation of those cells is tedious and time consuming. ArunA’s products eliminate this burdensome task and place these cells into the hands of researchers who otherwise may not have the capability or the resources to produce them. Using ArunA’s technology, researchers now have ready access to adherent monolayer human cell types derived from human stem cells thereby allowing for either small-scale or high throughput/ high content quantitative screens.
With the burden of maintaining human embryonic stem cell stocks relieved by ArunA, researchers in both pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions can now direct their efforts toward their primary research goals. The Company’s proprietary serum-free and feeder-free adherent monolayer technology platform provides “off the shelf” access to normal human cell types. This technology combined with ArunA’s proprietary qualified media and plate coating systems make their stem cell kits an efficient and economical alternative to less informative drug discovery and research tools currently available.
ArunA initially focused on providing neurobiologists with a robust starting population of neural progenitor (NP) cells, a critical unmet need for neuroscience. The company developed a method to derive Neural Progenitors from NIH-registered human embryonic stem cells (hES). Additionally, ArunA created optimized media specifically designed for the proliferation and differentiation of neural cell types. Their expertise in stem cells coupled with their media formulation capabilities allowed ArunA to produce the first user-friendly, turn-key tools for neuroscience researchers. These innovative kits contain cryopreserved Neural Progenitors, optimized cell-specific media and the reagents needed to propagate and differentiate Neural Progenitors into primary cultures of neural cells.
ArunA’s Neural Progenitor Cell products benefit biomedical research in neurological disorders and the basic science of human neural developmental pathways. The company’s first product, Human Neural Progenitor (NP) Cells, was launched in early 2007 and is sold via a partnership arrangement with Millipore under the ENStem-A™ Brand.
New products and services
ArunA has since released other neural pathway products, including further differentiated human neural cultures; additional neural pathway products are now under development.
In 2007 ArunA introduced its services division and now provides comprehensive testing and assay services based on their expertise and unique human stem cell derived research tools.
